The Bingaji Binalmal Project
Old to Young (in Kuku Yalangi language)
Bingaji Binalmal captures the stories and experiences of First Nations Elders from across Australia. The project connects young people with Elders through storytelling, preserving knowledge, culture and language for future generations.

The Bingaji Binalmal Project: Preserving Cultural Legacy
Books n Boots is committed to improving the health, wellbeing, educational outcomes and opportunities of First Nations children and communities across Australia. Through literacy programs, tutoring initiatives and culturally informed early intervention activities, we work to address educational disadvantage and support self-determination.
Bingaji Binalmal (Old to Young – My Kuku Yulangi Language) will preserve the oral histories of First Nations Elders who experienced significant barriers to education. Their stories provide important historical perspectives on educational inequality, resilience, and the role of literacy in creating opportunities for future generations.
The project will be culturally guided by respected Elders and Books n Boots Cultural Ambassadors, including Tommy Smith (Wiradjuri), Larry Walsh (Taungurung), Dr Carolyn Briggs (Boonwurrung), and the Books n Boots Chair (Meriam/Kuku Yulangi). These Elders will provide cultural guidance and mentoring to the youth documentary team and contribute their own stories and experiences to the project.
From Old to Young
Bingaji Binalmal is a National radio documentary project that captures the stories of 16 First Nations Elders, sharing their experiences of education, literacy, culture and language. Delivered by Books n Boots in partnership with 3CR Community Radio, the project will train four First Nations young people in interviewing, audio production and broadcasting. The completed documentary will be distributed nationally through the Community Broadcasting Association of Australia, reaching community radio audiences across the country.
Outcomes and Impact
Bingaji Binalmal creates lasting impact by preserving the stories, knowledge and experiences of First Nations Elders for future generations. Through recorded interviews and national radio broadcasts, the project ensures these important voices are heard, valued and archived.
The project also provides four First Nations young people with practical training in interviewing, storytelling, audio production and broadcasting. By connecting Elders and young people through shared stories, Bingaji Binalmal strengthens cultural identity, promotes intergenerational learning, and highlights the importance of education, literacy, culture and language in First Nations communities.
